Paul Thomas Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson is an American director and screenwriter, one of his most notable films is his 2007 film 'There Will Be Blood'. Anderson is another filmmaker who is also highly regarded for his interesting take on sound in his films. In the first 20 minutes of There Will Be Blood there is no dialogue so the film relies heavily on interesting sound design to maintain the audiences interests. One of the main sounds of the scene is a high-pitched, electronic, uneasy and non-diegetic drone which appears immediately as the film begins alongside an image of the desert landscape in which the film is set. This sound, implying themes of danger, seems to highlight the fact that the landscape is dangerous (a villain.) Throughout the film it becomes clear that this is indeed the case, as the landscape and their greed towards it's oil ulitamately becomes the characters demise, and it seems that the sound is suggesting this to audiences in the films opening. This is an example of sound helping to illustrate points that cannot be shown on screen: themes like violence.
